SMALL SOLDIER, BIG JOB: Sixth grader Ryan Wright carries the blue flag of a Union unit. During the Civil War, flag bearers helped soldiers march in straight lines. Crisp, orderly rows were considered a sign of a well-run unit. Watching the reenactors, author Peter Winkler scribbled in his notebook: "Tidiness of formations amazes me."
